| Sunflower Studios is owned and
operated by Annie Porter-Racobs. In 1989,
Annie purchased her Louet spinning wheel, a wheel
that comes from Holland. Known for its high
productivity, a Louet spinning wheel is not a very
traditional looking spinning wheel. Annie
enjoys hers because of the ease in which it
travels, taking it to deomnstrations at local
schools and community clubs. She also enjoys
the wide variety of yarns it will spin. Due
to the nature of her weavings, she likes to have
many choices of texture and color.
Her weavings are called
tapestry weavings and they are created in an
off-loom technique. She most often times
depicts the beauty of the beloved Loess Hills in
which she resides. Often capturing moments
of beauty that she sees while hiking and traveling
through-out western Iowa. Many times
incorporating small pieces of nature that she
finds while hiking the hills.
In 1998, due to the
great need for space for her creative activity,
she opened Sunflower Studio in a building next to
her home. The year 2000 brought about the
purchase of Sunflower Studios current location.
Originally built in 1888 for the Seventh
Day Adventists, then it was sold in
approximately 1952. The church was
operated as the Reorgnized Latter Day
Saints until approximately 1967. At
that time, it was sold & turned into a
home until Annie purchased it in 2000. It is
now the home of Sunflower Studio, where Annie has
moved her art and collectible business, which
includes a selection of vintage glass, jewelry and
textile items. Handcrafted items from local
crafts persons are also
offered.
