The Congregational Church of Castana was
organized on August 14, 1886. In less than 6
months the building had been completed on the hill
at Second and Linden Streets. The dedication took
place on January 23, 1887. The present church
building was orginially erected as a Methodist
Episcopal Church in 1898. The union of
Congregational and Christian Churches was in
November of 1907. In 1910, the building was
purchased by the Congregationalists, and in 1912
the Methodist organization was officially
disbanded.
In 1918, the north wing was
added to the church. In 1923, the Community Church
was organized. In the early 1960's a new addition
was begun on the east end of the church providing
another entrance both to the upper part of the
church and to the basement. It included an updated
kitchen in the basement and additional classrooms
upstairs.
In 1966, the yoking with St.
Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton with
the Castana Community United Church of Christ was
approved. *************************************

lunches following funeral services, taking fruit
baskets and carols sung to shut-ins at Christmas
time, greeting cards are sent to members of the
community, supporting the church with regular
monthly pledges, conducting meetings at the three
area nursing homes each year, and many other
projects.
The Ladies Aid has three meal
fundraisers each year.

In addition, the Ladies Aid members
have used some of the profits to purchase needed
equipment such as tables, chairs, silverware,
tablecloths, dishes, cooking utensils, vaccuum
cleaners, etc. These funds have also been used in
other ways in the community.
The Aid is a
member of the Maple Heights Nursing Home
Auxiliary. Duties include serving once a year by
being in charge of lunch and having the prizes for
the Bingo. In addition, if it is the monthly day
to celebrate birthdays, a small remembrance to
each one celebrating another year of life. They
have served refreshments at Vacation Bible School
and Sunday School parties, donated to the Sunday
school fund when their treasury got too low,
helped fire victims, the Goodwill, American Lung
Association of Iowa, CROP, Crossroads of Western
Iowa, led church services, and donated to
other causes.
The Castana Ladies Aid has
been and continues to be an integral part of the
Castana community by serving Christ and His church
through the service of others. insert
