For over 58 years, Castana citizens have been buying their meat and grocery items from Ronnie at “Burkey’s” Store.  Custom butchering, locker storage and providing the occasional bone for Chester, the hound dog, are but a few of the benefits of having Burke’s store in town.  Open 7 days a week and closing rarely, Burke’s now has three additional employees.  Whether it be for a cold can of soda or a roast and potatoes for the evening meal, Castana is fortunate to have Burke’s Grocery and Meat Market in town.

Located in the Castana area for 28 years, Jerry and Debbie Kessler have been the resident potters of Monona County.  Commissioned yearly by the Moorhead Cultural Center, their beautiful Loess Hills commemorative plates honor The Hills and are treasured by residents and tourists alike.  Their work can be seen at Reed Realty in Onawa (423-2800), at the Moorhead Center, and is featured in galleries across the country, primarily in the Midwest.

Richard and LaDonna Bumann are the owner/operators of Timber Ridge.  With miles and miles of trails, Timber Ridge offers exciting terrain for dune buggies, trail and mountain bikes, four-wheelers and the occasional horse.  Groups from surrounding areas and states meet regularly for competition and fun on the Timber Ridge trails. Participation is by membership only.

Custom cuts, your logs or theirs, can be obtained at Timber Ridge Sawmill.  Steve also saws lumber for manufacturing companies from Omaha to Des Moines and cities in between.  In the same location since 1971, the mill burned in the early years, was rebuilt, and is now owned and run by Steve Bumann.

Wayne Roush is the man to contact for information regarding the Western Iowa Experimental farm, located outside Castana.  The farm, a part of Iowa State University, conducts agricultural research and demonstrations.  The 280-acre tract is one of a system of twelve farms across the state.
